What’s been going on, ladies?

The Christmas/New Year season this year was full of challenges for us!!  AmBux had a health scare and one of her close family members got a difficult medical diagnosis. I was diagnosed with an old injury that had been causing chronic abdominal pain and required surgery, and I missed several weeks of work due to pain and then recovery from surgery.  As of this writing, I’m not yet back at work. These health concerns and realities have been a burden physically, emotionally, and financially.

We try to roll with the punches but man, 2019 hit us hard!  My surgery was on January 2, really starting our new year off with a bang.  We are facing the situation head on, and I’m doing everything I can to make sure recovery goes well and I can get back to work ASAP.  It sucks to miss work around the holidays as a massage therapist, those are some big money shifts.  It double sucks to go from big money to no money, missing all that work.  I am fortunate to work for a company that does offer PTO- not very common in this industry- but I used all of mine in June of 2018 when a bum shoulder took me out of the game for awhile.

We have been doing our best to pay off the medical bills as they come in.  Having an emergency fund makes this possible, but it is still stressful to see that cushion get smaller and smaller.  It will be such a relief when I am back at work and we can get our emergency fund back where it was and have the medical bills paid off, too!  We try to keep everything in perspective and recognize how much we have to be thankful for, but it can be hard not to take our stress with the situation out on each other.

Speaking of things to be thankful for, if you ever find yourself in a situation like this (I’m talking health crisis, new baby, surgery, sick parent who you suddenly have to care for, ETC…) ask one of your friends to set up a Meal Train for you.  My friend asked me if I wanted her to set one up; it hadn’t occurred to me.  I am so thankful she did!  We have friends bringing us meals, some people got us gift cards for delivery services- it has been such a blessing. I don’t use the word blessing very often, so really.  It feels like a huge relief to have that part of life taken care of.  And it’s so nice to see that people care, they want to bring you things and visit you!  Receiving these gifts makes me feel excited about paying it forward to my friends and family.  We all go through tough times, you know?

We are looking forward to what 2019 will bring and what kinds of things we’ll get to do with Big Girl Bucks!  Are there things you’re interested in reading about that we can address here?  What are your 2019 money goals?  Please tell us in the comments!
